Inspired from supercomputer and mainframe technology, the NEC Express5800/1080Rf is a highly expandable mid-range platform for consolidation, database, and line-of-business applications. Supporting the full family of Intel® 9000 and 9100 Series Itanium® processors, and scalable from 2 to 16 processor cores, this server is suited perfectly for database and very broad application deployments.

The NEC Express5800/1080Rf server utilizes the third-generation NEC A3 chipset, delivering unsurpassed performance for the Itanium processor through a combination of enhanced Very Large Cache (VLC) bypass bus as well as tag-based cache coherency. Supporting up to 8 processors and 16-cores in a single 8U cabinet, 1080Rf redefines mid-range system processing power.

Supporting industry standard operating system environments, the NEC Express5800/1080Rf supports the following operating systems:

Enhanced Scalability
As the first OEM to develop a scalability chipset (code named AzusA) for the Intel® Itanium® processor, NEC has refined and improved on the architecture, providing substantial system performance gains through the development of the NEC A3 chipset. Invented by NEC, this chipset fully unleashes the power of the processor by lowering memory latencies; providing extensive reliability, availability, and serviceability (RAS) features; and increasing memory and I/O subsystem scalability. This architecture also increases balanced performance across transactional and batch workloads.

Improved Reliability
The NEC Express5800/1080Rf server has improved reliability through the combination of the A3 chipset and Itanium Machine Check Architecture (MCA). Mainframe technologies that increase the levels of system and application availability. These include the ability to detect and correct single and double bit errors — reducing memory errors and improving overall system integrity by requiring significantly fewer reboots from memory failures.

The server also features built-in error protection for the processor and management with the integrated service processor.

Improved Reliability Storage
The large internal disk capacity provides flexibility in storage options. You can use internal storage for self-contained applications, achieve the advantage of centralized storage through server management tools and requires fewer devices. You can also extend your system to incorporate NEC D-Series, the industry-leading portfolio of network storage solutions, which make it easy for you to increase information availability while radically cutting costs.

Mainframe Reliability
The NEC Express5800/1000 Series system is divided into processing and memory "cells," each with four processor sockets and the associated memory. Each cell is connected to the other cells and the I/O. These cells can be partitioned at the hardware level to create multiple physically isolated servers, depending on what each environment needs.
